SHARE THE GRAYT: What We Can Learn from Virginia McLaurin’s Dance with The Obamas

STG6 Obama & Virginia FI

Last week, a video featuring 106-year old Virginia McLaurin meeting President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama melted my heart. This very moment melts away the political associations, political perceptions, or any political misconceptions about the Obama administration–this moment is about the realization of the impossible.

As the first black president, the Obamas’ meeting with Victoria McLaurin greatly signifies how far we have come as a society. Nevertheless, here’s a few ways this video shows us how we can go farther:

  1. Acknowledge your history & honor those who have endured: Both Obama & McLaurin acknowledge the history that they represent. With honor, there’s value in respecting those whose life and whose experiences paved the way.
  2. Never stop dreaming: McLaurin is noted to be in disbelief. Even if she did stop dreaming of a black president, its monumental to know that our wildest dreams or wildest imaginations may come true.
  3. Keep moving: Movement was the key to McLaurin’s joyous dance at the age of 106. We can only move history forward for another 100 years if we keep moving, keep working, and keep building on our dreams!
