Terrence Roberts in 1957
Pure inspiration and the definition of perseverance–the words that describe Dr. Terrence Roberts. Last Thursday, it was an honor to hear him speak at my university–Pepperdine. As one of the nine individuals who heroically integrated Little Rock Central High School in 1957, Dr. Terrence Roberts is the epitome of inspiration and perseverance. Not only did he endure the torment, hate, and disgust of a great majority of America during the 1950’s, however, he pressed through all of it to acquire knowledge and obtain a better education.
A key to his endurance was the fact that we are, “Built to make history!” A key part of making this history is that we are the “Chief Executive Officers of our independent learning enterprise.” The above picture not only captures the essence of the 1957 desegregation, however, it captures the essence of the history that Dr. Terrence Roberts made, the history we can make, and the history future generations can make.
